Gatsby Welles is a student at upstate Yardley College and the son of wealthy NYC parents. Yardley has no special appeal to him. He’s there only because he loves his girlfriend Ashleigh, a quite rich and somewhat naive student from Tucson. Ashleigh is travelling into New York to interview well-known filmmaker Roland Pollard for the college paper, and Gatsby is coming along to show her Manhattan. Gatsby plans lots of romantic visits, though less interested in attending his parents’ Autumn’s Gala in the evening. He and Ashleigh arrive at an upscale hotel where Ashleigh is to interview Pollard. When she goes alone to meet him, Pollard appears smitten with her good looks and invites her to go to a local private screening soon after the interview starts. When Gatsby phones, she tells him she’ll not be able to show at their rendez-vous. Upset, Gatsby bumps into a student director friend while strolling alone through New York, who asks him to stand in for a missing actor in a test shot for a screen kiss. Gatsby is surprised when it turns out that his screen kiss is to be with Shannon who is the younger sister of a previous girlfriend as it starts to rain. He says he likes the kiss but is involved with someone from Tucson. They prepare for a second screen test kiss when prompted by the student director. He tries to telephone Ashleigh on her mobile to get together later but is put off when Pollard, his writer, and one of his stars keep Ashleigh busy by making passes at his naive 21-year-old girlfriend and aspiring journalist.
